Any cheating, be it bug-abuse, third-party tools, or "memory editing", as you put it, can result in a ban. In fact, many things can result in a ban.
A ban is a method of preventing a user from using a specific action on a specific community (i.e.: Accessing the community) - it's set by the owners of a community, who are only humans. They do as they choose, thus, anything can technically result in a ban.
Anyways, there's no real implications for memory editing, other than potential system damage, or causing damage on a server end (Which could have some implication - though "Accidentally" sending say, malformed packets, isn't something that's usually done on accident, or via memory editing).
