You're not placing wards only to check for anyone farming at neutral creeps, wards also act as a watch tower for any possible gangbangs. Using wards are probably better than using a gem. You only get gem when you're ready to start a gangbang and continuous fights to push and win the game. Other than that, its to risky to get a gem especially during early and mid game. Cause during then, there's no one good enough to secure the gem.
