Modding your own GW!

Although most players already know this is possible and allowed by ArenaNet i thought it'd be nice to open a special topic for it.

Disclaimer
ArenaNet announced that modding your Guildwars using Texmod to make the game more fun is allowed, although they do not support it.
One thing one must know before modding his GW Client...
If you are modding your GW Client to have unfair advantages over other players, it will considered as cheating and WILL get you banned.
So for your own sake, please only use this to make the game more fun and do not attempt to create mods to have unfair advantage over others!

================================================== =

Ok here's how it works.
First of all you will need Texmod which can be downloaded [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
Texmod is a small applications that logs every texture loaded by the targeted application and is able to store those textures onto your hard drive.

Creating a Mod.
  1. Open up Texmod and select your Target Appliacation, direct it to your Guildwars executable (gw.exe).
  2. Select "Logging Mode"
  3. Keep all values at the standard value if you're not sure what you're doing.
  4. Select your output folder.
  5. Press "Run!" to run Guildwars with Texmod.
  6. Now once inside the game you can browse through the loaded textures with the "+" and "-" key. You can capture a texture and export it to your Output folder with the "Enter" key if you did not change it.
  7. Once exported just use your favourite image editor to edit the textures to your liking and save them.
Compiling the mod.

  1. Be sure all your modified textures are in the same directory.
  2. Open up Texmod, select your Target Application (gw.exe) and switch to "Package Build".
  3. As a definition file use the "Texmod.log" inside the folder where your textures are.
  4. Enter your name in the Creator textbox and add some additional info to explain what the mod does or anything.
  5. Press "Build" and save it somewhere on your pc.
  6. Texmod will save it as a *.tpf file which can be loaded with Texmod at any time.
Using a mod.

  1. Open up Texmod and select your Target Application.
  2. Switch to "Package Mode".
  3. Add the mod(s) you wish to use and press "Run" to run the game.
  4. Now the mod should be working and u'll start noticing the changes pretty soon.
Have fun modding!

FAQ

Q. Are the mods i'm loading into my game permanent?
A. No, because they're loaded through Texmod it does NOT modify your gw.dat and they can be easilly switched off by quitting the game, exiting Texmod and start the game normally.

Q. Is it possible to get banned for editing these textures?
A. You will not get banned as long as you are not editing the textures to give you an unfair advantage over others.

Q. Do other people see my ultimate pwnage weaps and armorz?
A. No, the mod you are using is completely client-sided and other people will NOT see them as long as they are not using your mod.

Re: Modding your own GW!

To make it more clear how ArenaNet thinks about this tool i'll paste a quote from the discussion thread i've had with ArenaNet's support a few days ago:

Woah. This deserves a sticky, until there are any GW Mods.

Re: Modding your own GW!

Be sure you are in "Logging Mode" and "Draw Control and Texture info", "Show Texture on upper left corner" and "Replace texture (with a green texture)" are ticked on.

Then press Run to launch GW and you should see some red text in your upper left corner of the screen which explains how to use the Texmod.

How your client should look when you successfully loaded it with Texmod:

Re: Modding your own GW!

As requested...some screens of some mods that have been created before:

Fellblade modded to a lightning blade

Storm Bow Lightning Color Changed to Red

White Paragon wings (instead of gold)

Cartography Made Easy

Dark Glass User Interface

This is only a small taste of what's about to come. *cough*nudemod*cough*

With this i was thinking, maybe we could modify almost the entire client and create a very own GzP Guildwars Skin.
It should be a lot of work, but i'm sure at the end it's something we can be proud of.
