im going to buy guildwars or can i just buy nightfall instead of guildwars and it will be the same ?

you can but you cant play the prophecies part(first one) and Nightfall is being realeased soon I think so you should wait

they are seperate games it jsut if you have all you can merge and move your char from one game to the other games content plus you cant get thechar classes that comes from the other game

If you have enough money, buy all three versions. But if you can't buy all three, get nightfall. If you absolutely CANT wait for nightfall, just buy factions and prophecies(original) That should keep you in motion for nightfall.

The nice thing about Guild Wars games and expansions is that they are all stand alone.
You can buy Prophecies and play just fine, but won't have access to Factions areas, but you could also just buy Factions, but you won't have access to Prophecies areas. Equipment can be transferred from one to another, though =)

of course this is also a downside because since there standalone they sell for 50$ instead of the usual expansion price of like.. 20~30

They cost that much so that Anet doesn't have to charge us to play the game online, like WoW does.
And I think 20$ extra for unlimited gameplay, for an stand-alone expansion, is worth it.
