Question Hack buying avatar (old)

So a friend of mine got banned years ago, when I asked her about it, she got banned for buying avatar without the funds. The way she put it was...

Her: "So what stops you from buying avatars if you cant afford it?"
Me: "Hmm o.0 Dunno..."
Her: "..."
Me: ".........."
Her: "Fine, you just need to get passed the screen telling you you don't have enough gold. Once you do that, you buy avatar (your gold will become negative)."

Now she was banned, which would likely imply by now this has been patched, but I am curious how someone goes about doing this. I have lost contact with my friend, but I am still curious about this. Would one debug the running process, change something in the files saved on the computer?

I am very interested in how this worked. :)
