Part A: Noobie Island
A mage needs intelligence as well as a little bit of luck. To be exact, a mage needs (His/her level) + 3 LUK.
For Hackers: You might want to use Unrandomizer to get 4/4/13/4 stats.
On noobie island, you should kill green snails until level 8, which is when you go to Victoria to get the Job Advancement. The most common hunting ground for snails is the first map past all the get-to-know-maplestory quests. Whether it be by Vaccing and Godmoding, or training legitimately, getting a noobie to level 8 is pretty annoying. Each level, or at level 8, put skill points into INT and LUK so that LUK is 3 plus your level and INT is the rest of the points. Your skill build once at level 8 should be 4 STR/4 DEX/41 INT/11 LUK. As for Noobie skills, I'd recommend 1 point into snail shell toss, 3 points into speed, then put the last two points into snail shell toss AFTER reaching level 8. This is so you can use the snail shells recieved from killing Green Snails. Once you reach level 8, you should head to SouthPerry (the quickest way is to die). The first job advancement is to Magician. Talk to Grendel the Really Old on top of Ellinia to advance.

Part B: Knowing your Skills
Improving Mana Recovery (16): [Passive] Each level in this increases the user's ability to recover mana by 1. The user's ability to recover mana is also affected by Level and INT.
Improving Max Mana Increase (10): [Passive] Each level in this increases the Maximum MP gained per level by 2, so at level 10, user gains 20 extra Maximum MP per level. Also, if AP points are applied, Maxixmum MP is increased by 3 per level in this skill. (Requires 5 Improving Mana Recovery)
Magic Armor (20): [Supportive] Each level in this increases the user's ability to add weapon defense as well as the duration of the skill. Each successive level increases Weapon Defense by 2 and Duration by 14, starting with 54. (Requires 3 Magic Guard)
Magic Guard (20): [Supportive] Each level in this increases the user's ability to substitute damage to HP with MP as well as the duration of the skill. Each successive level increases the ratio of damage to MP total damage and Duration by 21 seconds, starting with 111.
Energy Bolt (20): [Attack] This skill is an attacking skill that does not follow a steady pattern of increase in damage and mana cost, so I put the following: (Uses One Attack with Basic Damage)

Part D: Job Advancement and Cleric Skills
The second job advancement involves fighting (durrrrr). Upon reaching level 30, talk to Grendel the Really Old, and he'll give you a letter to take to his find. Go to the top left portal in Ellinia, and follow the maps until you reach His friend (at the top of Forest North of Ellinia). He will take you to a map full of Horned Mushrooms and Cursed Eyes. Kill until you get 30 marbles, then exit the map, via Grendel's friend's friend. Talk to Grendel's friend after obtaining 30 dark marbles, head back to Ellinia and talk to Grendel.
Advantages of Becoming a Cleric: Everyone wants you in his/her party due to Heal and Bless, and later on Holy Symbol.
Disadvantages of Becoming a Cleric: You're the weakest of all the mage classes in damage.
MP Eater(20): [Passive] Allows the user to drain an enemy's MP. Each successive level adds a 1% success rate and a 1% yield, starting with 11% success and a 21% yield.
Teleport(20): [Supportive] Allows the user to teleport. Each successive level before level 10 decreases MP cost by 3, each level after level 10 increases Distance by 2 and decreases MP cost by 2, starting with 130 Distance and 60 MP Cost.
Invincible(20): [Supportive] Decreases physical damage recieved by a certain percentage. Each successive level increases the percentage by 1% and duration by 15 seconds, starting with 11% and 15 seconds. Costs 15 MP before level 11, and 30 MP after level 10. (Requires 5 Heal)
Bless(20): [Supportive] Increases Party Weapon defence, Accuracy, and Avoidability by the level of Bless and lasts the Level x 10. Costs 12 MP before level 11 and 24 MP after level 10. (Requires 5 Invincible)
Heal(30): [Active and Supportive] A supportive skill that damages Undead monsters. Recovers HP by level x 10%. Damage done or Amount heal is determined by amount of Undead monsters and party members to be healed. Damage is also affected by Magic attack. Costs 12 MP to use before level 16 and 24 MP to use after level 15.
Holy Arrow(30): [Active] Each successive level in this skill increases Basic Attack by 2, starting with 22. Every 3 levels, mastery is increased by 5%, starting with 15%. Costs 12 MP to use before level 16 and 24 MP to use after level 15.
