| Registered User | Re: Gates: Nintendo is Our 'Toughest Competition' Yeah, I saw that clip of Gates talking about Wii supremacy on Youtube about a week ago. So true, too. Sony dropped the ball on the PS3 worse than any company I've ever seen, and it wasn't just over the past 3 months, Sony's been pretending they're perfect ever since they went on record with that whole 'people will buy a ps3 no matter the cost' thing way back in like June or July. If you go check ps3scene.com you'll see a recent article about major (10,000 yen) retailer price cuts on the 20gb model in Japan just to try to get them off of store shelves. On the other hand, I waited in line for 40 minutes at Best Buy this morning and they sold out of Wii's before I had a chance to buy one, and I've been at this for over 3 weeks now. And there are at least 25 60gb PS3's at my local Best Buy (and have been for about a week now), possibly more, I didn't bother taking time to count the stacks. I've got a neat little fact to throw at Nintendo fanboys, though. Back in the early 90's, Nintendo contacted Sony about making a "Nintendo Playstation" that used (the then new) cd format for gaming purposes. After the contracts were signed, Nintendo realized that they would be losing out on the licensing income from their cartridge-based system (Nintendo was able to charge fees for using 'their' cartridges, but couldn't if the media was a cd, the rights to which they didn't own), so they basically reneged on that contract and went behind closed doors to talk to Phillips about making a cd-based gaming system with cd technology that Nintendo would own (they also gave Phillips the right to use both the Zelda and Mario franchise to make games for their new CD-I gaming system, which resulted in 3 of the most hilariously terrible Zelda games in history, look up 'Zelda faces of evil' on youtube for a good laugh). To make matters worse, the day after Sony announced the partnership with Nintendo that probably would have made them both a hell of a lot of money, Nintendo announced their own partnership with Phillips and declined any comment on the new Playstation at all. Needless to say, Sony was properly pissed off (as was Japan as a whole, actually... the big N bitch slapped a local and slept with a foreigner). So, like 3 or so years later, the Sony Playstation hit store shelves and the rest is history. And as for handhelds, last I checked, the DS was hand over fist more popular than the PSP. A friend of mine works at a local game store, and he mentioned that this x-mas was the first time they've ever been sold out of the PSP since he started there and they got more in the next day. |

| Registered User | Re: Gates: Nintendo is Our 'Toughest Competition' A standard xbox360 heats up to a whopping 82.4 degrees Fahrenheit after an hour booted to the dashboard. Over heating is more isolated and, as I've never once had a problem with it, I believe it to be stupidity related. Like people putting couch cushions on top of their xbox and using it as a gaming chair. Thermal image below. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] And the ps3 can actually play ps2 games, they look like ass if you play them on hd tv's due to the lack of a downsampler (which also means that bluray movies are played at a whopping 480p is you don't have a 1080p tv, since the ps3 can't downgrade the resolution to anything else). So to make them look good you need to use shitty cables and lower your tv's resolution. And the Wii... well, the controller breaks things, but only if you're careless or stupid. The new straps don't break (the plastic holding the strap to the controller breaks first), so it comes down to simple human error. |

And the PS3 will cost more in some of the countries they're about to release in, Australia for example is getting something along the lines of a 15% price hike. And what makes you think that PS3 will sell more in Europe than it does in Japan or North America? The games will suck there just as much as they do here, and the system will still be lacking any support for TV's that aren't full 1080p (and for the slow, that means that the PS3 is physically incapable of converting resolutions from one grade to another... so they can't make a blu-ray movie play in less than 1080p (if your TV can't handle that, the TV will literally downgrade the signal manually to the non-hd resolution of 480, instead of perhaps 780, if you have an older hd TV), and the same can be said for games... no current PS3 games produce true 1080p graphics, and the PS3 is unable to modify the output to optimize resolutions on a 1080p television, so your 1080p TV won't look any better than a 780, even if you manually go in and change the resolution settings). On the other hand, the 360 has a little chip that changes the output resolution based on your preferences (quite well, actually), so the same games (Madden, for example, but there are many others), actually look BETTER on an xbox360 when used on a 1080p TV (and the same when used on any other TV), despite the same poly count and virtually identical textures, simply due to the enhanced crispness of a higher resolution. And the Wii has no need for any of that since it's natively a 480 console. It doesn't even use HD, which disappointed me at first, but, like so many have said over the years. It's a game, as long as it's fun, graphics really don't matter. And the sales have proven that. Play a Wii and you'll want one. I made that mistake and I've been trying to get one ever since to no avail. If the games can live up to the interface, Nintendo will regain control of the market, it's as simple as that.

Quote: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] Of course that does not factor in what Sony is making through games sales, regardless, Sony is paying more to actually make a PS3 console than the price they sell it at. Aside from that, Neofx, the reason I called you can idiot, is because of this post: Quote:
Oh, and here's one more fun little link for you to read: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] Anyone who doesn't know that whole story isn't a fanboy.

| Registered User | Re: Gates: Nintendo is Our 'Toughest Competition' Now that's entirely false. Most fanboys don't know anything about what they like. Just look at the PS3 boy you kept quoting. And those of us who are old enough to know that story are generally past the rabid fanboy stage, or perhaps my definition of 'fanboy' is slightly outdated or skewed due to my anime influence, but as far as I'm aware there is quite a difference between 'fan' and 'fanboy'. edit: Oh wow, I just read that news article, and amazingly enough, it's correct. The PS3 broke the million mark in early January, just like I said it did. About 2 weeks after the Wii sold its millionth unit. Incredible. And they've managed to sell about 100k more since then. That's, like... um... maybe like a bajillion PS3's by the end of the year right? Or maybe it's more like 2.5 million... I'm not quite sure. Last edited by snoopykoo; 01-24-2007 at 04:12 AM.. |

| Registered User | You should consider that the wii is the cheapest system, and since christmas just came by, lots of people wanted the cheap system to giv for a gift(wii $250),some got the not so pricy(XBox360 $350) and very few got the super expensive(PS3 $499-$599). I dont know about some people, but if i could choose any of the three for free i would choose PS3 cause it has the best graphics and just plain better gameplay. my point: NINTENDO SUCKS it has so little games as you can see in their previous consoloes. the competition is between 360 and PS3 ![]() |
