The Abyss - The addition of the Abyss to the RuneScape members world made a huge impact on how RuneCrafting was done, making it overall easier than it was before it's release, to gain both levels and money at a faster rate. Basically what the Abyss is is an area of RuneScape completely divided from the rest, that has many monsters in a double-ringed area.
Outer Ring - In the first ring, or outer ring, are three different types of monsters that drop mainly Talismans, and Rune Essense Pouches, which allows a carrier to hold essense in, pending on it's size.
Inner Ring - The second ring, or inner ring, is composed of twelve rifts, for each of the twelve different runes, which teleport you to the corresponding temple of the rune. The Blood and Soul rifts are included in the inner ring, however players cannot pass through it.
The Quest - To access the Abyss, you must complete the Mage of Zamorak quest. The following guide will take a step-by-step look at the quest, and everything else you need to know about the Abyss, how it works, and what to do to prepare for it.
=================================================
2.0 [ Mage of Zamorak Mini Quest ]
Mage of Zamorak - First, you must do the Mage of Zamorak Mini Quest. Talk to the Mage of Zamorak, usually in level 4-6 wilderness, north of Edgeville, along the Edgeville river.
PKers - Watch out for pkers! If there are any players within 5 levels of your level, I suggest you world hop to another world, and try again. The conversation with the mage is not long at all.
Beginning The Quest - He will tell you to meet him in the Varrock Chaos Temple, which is NOT the Chaos Temple north of Varrock in lvl 20+ wilderness (I went there and nearly got pked :(). It is actually the building south of Aubry's runes shop in South-Eastern Varrock.
The Chaos Temple - The Zamorak Mage will be in the southern most part of that building. Talk to him for awhile, and he will give you a Scrying Orb and he will ask you to go to three different people that teleport you to the Rune Essense mining area.
The Scryers - There are five people throughout RuneScape that teleport you to the mining area, and the choices are Aubury in Varrock, Sedridor at the Wizard's Tower near Draynor, Cromperty in Ardougne, the gnome wizard Brimstail hiding in a cave in the south west corner of Gnome Stronghold, or the wizard Frumscone in the Magic Guild.
The Rewards - Once you have teleported to the Essense mining area three times, the Scrybe will be charged, and you can talk to the Zamorak Mage again. Talk to him twice to recieve your rewards, which are about 1k magic exp, a book filled with information on the abyss, and a Small Pouch for Rune Essense storage.
The Small Pouch - Does not require any RuneCrafting level, and holds 3 Rune Essences, and looks like this:
Teleporting To The Abyss - To reach the abyss, go back to the Mage of Zamorak in the Wilderness, and you now have the option to have you teleported to the abyss.

3.0 [ Pouches ]
Important Things To Know - Before RuneCrafting, you should get armor, a weapon, teleport runes, a Ring of Wealth and plenty of food. Do
NOT bring anything too valuable! You get automatically skulled when you enter the abyss, and all prayer points are drained, and if you die, you, of course, LOSE EVERYTHING!
The Creatures - Check for pkers, then enter the abyss. Attack the abyssal creatures there, who are all aggresive and will begin to attack you the second you enter. There are three types:
-
Abyssal Leeches
Combat lvl: 41
Hit Points: 10
Damage: Melee
-
Abyssal Guardians
Combat: 59
Hit Points: 50
Damage: Melee
-
Abyssal Walker
Combat: 81
Hit Points: 95
Damage: Melee and Ranged
Quick Pouches - If you want to get Rune Essense Pouches quickly, I recommend you kill Leeches, and an occasional Guardian. ALL abyssal creatures drop ALL pouches, so Leeches drop Giant pouches, and Walkers drop Small Pouches. Continue to attack the creatures until you have the pouches you desire (
NOTE: you can get all the pouches no matter what your RuneCrafting is, but can only store essense in it with the required RuneCrafting level) . Once you do, teleport out of the abyss, and head back to Edgeville.
Losing Pouches - If you die with you pouches, you can talk to the Mage of Zamorak to get the Small Pouch back, but you MUST kill abyssal creatures the retrieve the other three, the Medium, Large, and Giant Pouches.
The Medium Pouch - Requires 25 RuneCrafting to use and stores 6 Rune Essense.
The Large Pouch - Requires 50 RuneCrafting to use, and stores 9 Rune Essense.
The Giant Pouch - Requires 75 RuneCrafting to use, and stores 12 Rune Essense.
How To Deal With Degrading - After awhile, the pouches will degrade, lowering the amount of rune essense possible to be carried for the largest pouch you have. To fix the pouch, simply talk to the Dark Mage in the center of the inner ring, and choose the bottom line. This will fix your pouch. If you forget to fix your pouch, and in the case of the Giant Pouch, the amount of rune essense possible to carry will lower after a few trips even more. So don't forget to fix it.

4.0 [ Abyssal RuneCrafting ]
FINALLY, you are ready to RuneCraft
- Equipment and Inventory
Armor And Supplies - First, you need the proper armor and supplies. Ask yourself what your best non-combat related skill is of the following: woodcutting, mining, agility, firemaking, or thieving. Bring the related skill's main item (example: if woodcutting, equip an axe, if firemaking, bring a tinderbox) if any. It doesn't matter if it's bronze or rune, they're just as effective.
God Books - Remember, if you lose your God Book, simply go back to the Lighthouse near Rellekka and ask the man inside for the God Book back, and he will return one to you without charge and with all pages. Do NOT use the Zamorak Book, it does not have a Magic Def Bonus. Use Guthix or Saradomin Book, preferably Saradomin, as it gives better Magic Def.
My Look - This is what I personally wear, and it's worked out for me thus far. I'm not saying this is the best way, and the way you should choose, but it's the basic idea for what you should look like:
Magic Defense and Weight - It's great to add to magic defense from this, but take into account, the more armor, the more weight your carrying, and the faster your energy will drain, so keep it light but try to have a good magic defense as well. If you don't have an instant click teleport, such as an Ectophial, Tiny Crystal, or Teleport Tablet, it might also be wise to bring a Ring of Dueling. It's saved me numerous times from when I forget to swap my uncharged Glory with a charged one.
Alternatives - If you dont have these items, here are some good alternatives you may want to consider:
- Body, Legs, Gloves: Lesser Dragonhide, or Ghost Robes
- Back: Legends Cape, other God Capes
- Feet: Mystic Boots (Adds to Magic Def)
- Head: Archer Helm (Better than Mystic Hat in Magic Def, but costs more and can be hard to buy off players), Mind Helm
- Off-Hand: Elemental Shield, Guthix/Saradomin Book, Anti-Dragonfire Shield, Rune Square Shield, Mind Shield
- Ring: Ring of Life or Abyssal Bracelet (5 charges, with it, you don't get skulled when you enter the Abyss)
Your Inventory - And you should be carrying items like this:
Surviving - Food is totally optional. If you have 70+ defense and 70+ HP, you don't need food as long as you have an instant teleport. If you are making Law Runes, food is recommended, since you cannot bring any weapons or armor with you to get into the Law Temple (it's located on Entrana). That means you must use your agility, thieving, and firemaking skills to get into the Law Temple. Saradomin Brews also work very nicely, since they can come in 4 doses, heal 20 HP and give you a defense bonus.
Instant Teleports - You can also bring teleport runes, an Ectophial, Teleport Tablet or Tiny crystal, which is recommended for quick and simple teleport just incase you are attacked. If you are using a instant teleport such as thesel, I recommend keeping it away from your pouches, as you might accidentally click them when you're filling/emptying your pouches.
Alternatives to Bringing A Glory - If you dont want to lose your glorys, then there are four simple methods you can use to avoid losing them. They may be slower, but if you'd rather be safe than sorry, you may want to turn to these methods:
1. Prayer Potion Method: Take a Prayer Potion with you and drink a dose if attacked by a PKer, then use Protect Item to keep your most valuable item, which is your glory, if you are not wearing any armor.
2. Ring of Dueling Method: You could also get Rings of Duelings and teleport to Castle Wars, bank, take out a Glory Amulet and teleport back to Edgeville. Both of these methods do slow you down a little bit, but if they are totally needed, then dont be afraid to use them.
3. Teleport POH Method: In this method, you take Earth, Air and Law Runes, or Tele Tablets, with you while RuneCrafting to teleport to your POH. If you have 47 Construction, you'll be able to mount a glory with an infinite amount of charges.
4. Peddewwa Teleport: This teleport is only available to those that have the Ancient Magick book, which is a reward from the Desert Treasure Quest. It teleports you to the dungeon below Edgeville, and costs 2 Laws, 1 Fire, and 1 Air to cast, so therefore can be used as a direct transport to Edgeville, wtihout a Glory.
5. Karamja Gloves Method: If you have the Karamja gloves, which are a reward from the Achievement Diary. Instead of using a Glory to teleport back, operate the Karamja Gloves to teleport to Shilo Village. Run to the bank and grab a Glory, and teleport back to Edgeville.
- The Wilderness Run
After Banking - Now, head into the wilderness, and check for pkers using the mini map. If there are pkers that are within five combat levels of yours, you can either world hop, or go through the back-door route that takes slightly longer to get around the pkers.
Be Alert For PKers - If there are no pkers, or if you feel safe to do so, right click the Mage of Zamorak and click "Teleport." I suggest, once in level 5 wilderness to keep going. If the PKer does eventually stop you, quickly teleport.
- The Abyssal Obstacles
Upon Entering The Abyss - Right off the bat, you will be attacked by the abyssal creatures. Run to one of the blockages that you need to destroy to get to the center (each requiring a level of 30+ to pass). Below are what obstacles you will encounter. The list includes the name of the action, the skill required, and the item required to get passed it, if any:
"
Chop Tendrils" (
Woodcutting - requires any
Woodcutting Axe)
"
Squeeze-Through Gap" (
Agility)
"
Distract Eyes" (
Thieving)
"
Mine Rocks" (
Mining - requires any
Pick Axe)
"
Burn Boil" (
Firemaking - requires
Tinderbox)
