Re: What does RAM actually do?

I'm too lazy to type it out, so here.
Quote:
Random access memory (usually known by its acronym, RAM) is a type of computer data storage. Today it takes the form of integrated circuits that allow the stored data to be accessed in any order, i.e. at random. The word random thus refers to the fact that any piece of data can be returned in a constant time, regardless of its physical location and whether or not it is related to the previous piece of data.[1] This contrasts with storage mechanisms such as tapes, magnetic discs and optical discs, which rely on the physical movement of the recording medium or a reading head. In these devices, the movement takes longer than the data transfer, and the retrieval time varies depending on the physical location of the next item. The word RAM is mostly associated with volatile types of memory (such as DRAM memory modules), where the information is lost after the power is switched off. However, many other types of memory are RAM as well (i.e. Random Access Memory), including most types of ROM and a kind of flash memory called NOR-Flash.

Re: What does RAM actually do?

In other words what icedgreece said that Ram Increases the amount of programs you can run and at a faster speed I'd Recommend 1.5gb of ram and they depend like DDR DDR2 DDR3 which is latest

Re: What does RAM actually do?

I'm going to put this in simple terms. RAM helps you to run more programs at higher speeds. However, there are different speeds of RAM and different voltages of RAM. By default, your computer's RAM voltage is set at 1.8v, but many new sticks run at 1.9v. It is always preferable to have more RAM - My computer is currently running with more RAM than I would need: 6GB.

When purchasing RAM, make sure you purchase RAM that is compatible with your motherboard, RAM that is the same brand, speed, and voltage, and that the motherboard is set at the correct voltage. Furthermore, if you feel it's necessary, you can speed up RAM timings - I won't get into that because it's difficult to explain, seeing that all motherboards have a slightly different procedure.

By the way, make sure all of your RAM is the same size. You will not be able to smoothly run a system that has two 2GB sticks and one 1GB stick.

The OS you use will depend on your computer specifications. If you have a multi core system running at 2.4 GhZ or better, 2-4GB of RAM, and at least an Nvidia 6800, get Vista. Otherwise, stick with XP.

<@Gate> I would know, my dad is a cook.
<@hesham8> Gate, what the **** are you talking about!? All you do is yell "BAM!" and throw chives everywhere.
<@hesham8> I do the same thing at weddings, except I yell "CONGRATULATIONS" and throw rice.
<@Gate> hesham8, you're a fag.
