| RPG Administrator | Re: What does RAM actually do? I'm going to put this in simple terms. RAM helps you to run more programs at higher speeds. However, there are different speeds of RAM and different voltages of RAM. By default, your computer's RAM voltage is set at 1.8v, but many new sticks run at 1.9v. It is always preferable to have more RAM - My computer is currently running with more RAM than I would need: 6GB. When purchasing RAM, make sure you purchase RAM that is compatible with your motherboard, RAM that is the same brand, speed, and voltage, and that the motherboard is set at the correct voltage. Furthermore, if you feel it's necessary, you can speed up RAM timings - I won't get into that because it's difficult to explain, seeing that all motherboards have a slightly different procedure. By the way, make sure all of your RAM is the same size. You will not be able to smoothly run a system that has two 2GB sticks and one 1GB stick. The OS you use will depend on your computer specifications. If you have a multi core system running at 2.4 GhZ or better, 2-4GB of RAM, and at least an Nvidia 6800, get Vista. Otherwise, stick with XP.
