Games to Watch in 2008

PS3 games to look for in 2008

The PS3 has a shocking number of games coming out in 2008. In the next few pages, we will attempt to highlight some of our most anticipated games of 2008. But watch out! Many of these dates are tentative and can fall into (cue dramatic music) 2009. Watch out! There's more! These are all the games we know about so far. Who knows what secrets will be released upon the unsuspecting PS3 public ...

Let's begin our journey into the beginning of 2008.

EA's next Burnout game takes the franchise into a whole new direction. Now, racers are able to roam anywhere they want in the massive Paradise City. With a simple press of a button, gamers can jump on the PSN and race against their friends. This is the first major PS3 game of the new year, and judging from the quality of the playable demo, this one is going to be a winner.

Capcom's new Devil May Cry game reminds us why we loved the franchise in the first place. Huge combos and flashy moves look great on the PS3. PlayStation fans can be happy knowing that the PS3 version includes extra functionality over the 360 version, and that it simply controls better using a PS3 controller. The story of Nero and Dante's new adventure looks hilariously over-the-top, and we can't wait. The Special Edition collection will hurt our wallets.

The dinosaur hunter is back, and he's better than ever. Of course, that doesn't really say much. Touchstone's reimagining of the Turok franchise is ferocious. Using the Unreal Engine, the game finally makes the dinosaur planet come to life, with lush greens and much, much less fog. Hopefully, the weapons you get access to will make hunting your foes (and dinosaurs) as fun as we're imagining it will be.

Koei keeps on trying. The Dynasty Warriors games remain a huge hit in Japan, and hardcore fans have been following the franchise for years now. Will the new graphics engine bring new gameplay to this aging hack and slash adventure? We hope so.

A lot of people are confused by this sampling of Gran Turismo 5. Prologue is, in fact, a demo of the final game (which is scheduled for the end of 2008). Although it's merely a sampling of the final game, it contains a huge number of cars and tracks that'll make any car enthusiast swoon. The hot new GT TV feature allows racing fans to catch programs never aired in the US. Watch for this on the PSN and at retail.

The original Condemned was one of Xbox 360's best launch titles. Although flawed, it had tons of great ideas. The sequel promises to make the fighting system even more robust, and the detective work a bit more engrossing. This creepy detective-brawler certainly adds a macabre flair to the beginning of the year.

Capcom angered a lot of PS3 fans when they over-hyped this PS3 port of the Xbox 360 action game. Lost Planet wasn't too bad -- but we're more interested in seeing how the PS3 community responds to the game's release in March. Will they dig this snow-covered bug-infested mech-battling adventure?

EA's Army of Two is sort of like a feel-good buddy cop movie. Only, with a lot more explosives and profanity. The duo must make smart use of their aggro to cover each other. It controlled a bit awkwardly when we last played it, but EA has smartly delayed the game to better tweak the mechanics. There's a lot of great ideas here -- let's hope it congeals into a fine game when it releases in March.

The best baseball game on the market gets even better. With a list of features too long to mention in this short blurb, MLB 08 The Show finally takes advantage of the PS3's power for a visually stunning baseball game.

Rainbow Six Vegas 2

You want more Vegas? Well, Ubisoft is giving it to you. Screens and videos of this quick sequel have been hard to come by. Is it too soon for another Tom Clancy shooter in Vegas? Maybe.

Free Radical's new FPS has you fighting the effects of a psychadelic drug called nectar. With a strong heritage of great shooters and an interesting premise, Haze may be the shooter PS3 fans have been hungry for.

Dark Sector is known as the first next-gen game ever announced. Well, now it'll have a chance at proving its worth in March. The game may take heavy inspiration from Gears of War, but the new glave weapon gives it some unique character. Heavenly Sword fans will love the use of SIXAXIS: you'll be able to use aftertouch to control where your deadly blades fly.

Finally! After months of waiting, English-speaking gamers will get their hands on the first Hot Shots game on the PS3. With attractive graphics, charming personality, and time-tested Hot Shots gameplay, we're certain that HSG 5 is everything we could've possibly wanted from a golf game.

PS3 Exclusive

There is perhaps no other PlayStation 3 title more hyped up than Killzone 2. Despite not looking quite as amazing as the infamous E3 trailer, more recent gameplay footage has proven Killzone 2 is a force to be reckoned with. Sure, the PS3 will have several exclusive FPS games by the time Guerilla Games' big title hits, but we all really know what we're waiting for.

Innovative. Cute. Original. All these words have been used to describe LittleBigPlanet, but its most important adjective that it certainly has is "fun." Promising a top notch physics engine, four player co-op and an extremely deep level creator, LittleBigPlanet will serve to cement the PlayStation Network's status of the platform where original games are made.

Set in between Episodes III and IV, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed will shed more light on Darth Vader. Yeah, we really don't need to hear any more to realize this game is going to kick major ass. But just in case you're not convinced, you'll take the role as Darth Vader's evil apprentice, who's job it is to travel to the deepest ends of the galaxy seeking out and vanquishing the remaining Jedi. You might want to get a napkin, cause we think your mouth is watering.

SingStar's greatest rival might have just recently launched on the PS3 in the form of Rock Band. However, while Rock Band's downloadable set list can be counted on a few hands and feet, Sony promises that more than 300 songs will be available to download when SingStar hits. What's more is Sony's karaoke beast features the song's actual music video, so music buffs are sure to flock to SingStar like moths to the flame.

Arguably, the true creator of survival horror, the next entry in the Alone in the Dark series is shaping up to everything that fans could possibly hope for. One interesting departure from tradition is the game's use of episodic structuring for its levels. Broken down in about a half hour, each episode will end in a cliff hangar to make it that much harder to put the game down. We just hope that Atari's recent financial problems don't mean Alone in the Dark will never see the light of day.

Free Realms
Whoever said the Wii is the only console with software aimed at children and families? Well, that's certainly not true! Case in point, is Sony's upcoming Free Realms, which shoots for a lighthearted take on the MMO genre and features entirely free online play. Supporting a plethora of customizable content for user's characters, Sony will also provide additional customization for a charge. Hey, they gotta make money somehow, right?

Grand Theft Auto IV promises to bring us the biggest, baddest and best-looking game yet in the series, and we can't wait. While it doesn't appear that Rockstar is changing up the recipe too much, we just can't wait to take another stroll through the streets of Liberty City leaving dead hookers in our wake.

While a few of the previous iterations in the Metal Gear series feature online modes, Metal Gear Online promises to hone it to perfection. Supporting up to 16 player combat, MGO will include such standard gameplay modes like Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and King of the Hill, it will also give player's the ability to give their character's three unique skills that will increase as you play.

If you haven't realized it by this point, 2008 is looking a lot better than last year in terms of the heavy hitters rolling onto the PS3, and there may be none bigger than Metal Gear Solid 4. Staying true to its tactical roots, MGS 4 will once again have you controlling Snake, but the big change is that you'll be smack dab in the middle of a huge war. From everything we've seen so far, Konami looks to have another great title on its hands.[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Sure, Home has been delayed more times than Michael Jackon's had cosmetic surgery, but one thing is for sure - once it's here, it will be truly awesome. Allowing users to create a highly customizable avatar complete with his own apartment, players will literally have a virtual living space for when you just get bored of your real house. Promising other great features like a Trophy Room where you can actually show what you've accomplished in a game is just a small taste of what sets Home apart from anything the competition is doing.

Q3

Fracture promises to deliver what Red Faction didn't. But Red Faction also made a lot of promises ... The terrain deformation looks very dramatic, and may provide a visceral experience that no other FPS game has. Granted, it's a crowded market. Will LucasArts be able to deliver?

Bethesda's take on everyone's favorite apocalypse looks absolutely stunning. Fallout is a beloved franchise to many, and for good reason. This PS3 flavored approach will reinvent the series, but hopefully Bethesda will be able to keep the sharp, dark bite the series has been known for. Considering their experience with The Elder Scrolls, we can be confident.

Quantic Dream is trying to push the boundaries of video game story telling yet again in their upcoming Heavy Rain. A serious emphasis on expressing human emotion from the team that brought us Indigo Prophecy (Fahrenheit) should bet anyone excited. We can't wait to see what this game is all about.

Prototype has you playing as a sinister hero (?) in an epic recreation of New York. The tone is dark, and the demonic powers bestowed upon the main character have us intrigued to find out more.

Q4
Borderlands
There is a great amount of talent behind Borderlands. Details have been scarce about Gearbox's upcoming FPS adventure, but the hype machine is already rolling strong. The teaser trailer that debuted a few months ago provided far more questions than answers, but the unique mood and approach of the trailer certainly give us hope.

Gran Turismo 5
No more demos. No more prologues. The full game is coming later this year, so long as Polyphony Digital keeps focused. Right? Right?

First revealed a while back, Sony's The Agency is touted to be the first major MMO title to get released exclusively on a console. It takes some stealth, some action, some FPS, and some RPG elements to make a pretty decent looking title that could swerve either into the "overhyped junk" pile or the "hidden gem of the PS3 universe" pile. We won't know until it gets a release date.
