Satin Silver PS3 bundled with Yakuza 3

After our initial wave of disappointment dissipated with the announcement that SCEA had no plans of [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], we were actually starting to feel pretty good, that is until we saw the [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Now our feelings of woe have returned tenfold.

Limited to only 1,000 units, the Yakuza 3 PS3 bundle will be released in Japan on March 6 (the same day as the regular Satin Silver PS3) for about $440 and will include some really neato [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. However, like the regular Satin Silver PS3, it won't come with a DualShock 3, but who needs that when you can come home with [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], right?

What makes this even worse for us is that Sega has yet to confirm a Western release of the game. Sega, can you please end our agony and just tell us when we can expect Yakuza 3?

SCEA: No plans for silver PS3 in North America

Do you remember last generation when Japan seemingly received new colored PS2s each week and then Sony never bothered to bring them to the West until much, much later? Well, it appears as if that trend is continuing with the PlayStation 3 as Sony Japan announced that the [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] will hit Japan early next month.

But do you think Sony Computer Entertainment America has plans to do the same? Not so much according to an SCEA representative who [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], "there are no plans for a silver PS3 in North America at this time."

While the news is disappointing for those few gamers who have been holding off for a different colored PS3, we rest assured knowing that Sony will surely bring these over at some point. After all, didn't the PSP just receive a silver makeover?

Red Faction III headed to PS3

Filed under: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
An overdue second sequel to the ahead-of-its-time Red Faction has been mentioned during a recent investor-focused conference call. THQ's CEO, Brian Farrell, explicitly stated that Red Faction III is in development for the PS3 by THQ's Volition Studios, the same developers who produced the first two games. The series has been on hiatus since Red Faction II was released in 2003.

The two first games utilised "Geo Mod" technology to allow players to damage the environment in realtime - something that's almost taken for granted nowadays but that was revolutionary back in 2001. We have great memories of creating cubby-holes and sniper points deep in the walls and waiting for an unsuspecting opponent to saunter past. Needless to say, we're psyched that Red Faction III is in development, despite the lack of any real details or even an official announcement.

ony wants Pirates Versus Ninjas Dodgeball on PSN

Filed under: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Gamecock is trying to capitalize on the popular internet meme in their upcoming XBLA game, Pirates Versus Ninjas Dodgeball. Although currently an XBLA exclusive, it looks like there's strong interest to bring the game over to the PSN. "Sony really wants this Pirates vs Ninjas game we're doing for Xbox Live and we're platform agnostic so if we're investing in a title let's give it a chance wherever there is one," Gamecock CEO Mike Wilson told [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

The PSN offers a number of unique opportunities for developers. Unique games like flOw and Everyday Shooter have managed to flourish on the PSN -- certainly, they would've floundered if released in a traditional retail space. Also, unlike XBLA, there are no size limitations on what developers can provide. "The market's not there yet but it will be and it's nice that you don't have this 150MB limitation. It will be interesting to see how it emerges as a market.

Sony's Giant Hologram Monster

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

It's finally happening: Sony is developing hologram technology. Just check out the above video, where the fog/vapor/whatever from a lake is used to create a truly haunting 3D image of everyone's favorite lake monster. At least, we think there's some fog. If there isn't, we have no idea how this was done. But we need them mass-produced and put in every lake around the world. Just for fun.

Analyst agrees with EA: 2008 is 'exceedingly strong' for PS3

Posted Feb 5th 2008 6:15PM by [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
Filed under: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
It's taking Sony's latest some time to build momentum. However, it's clear that 2008 will be a strong year for the PS3. Major publisher EA predicted not too long ago that Sony's system would actually outsell Xbox 360 this year, due to its popularity worldwide. Analyst Mike Hickey [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. "We expect PS3 unit sales will perform exceedingly strong in CY08, due to a recently reduced price point, killer content coming into the channel (GTA), and Blu-ray currently having a decided edge in the high definition format war," he said. He predicts the system will sell 5 million systems this year, which is within the range of EA's estimate. Obviously, a high price point, confusing HD format war, and small software library were all contributing factors to a sluggish start for PS3. However, now that all of these hurdles have been overcome, things are looking in Sony's favor, particularly due to the success of their last console. "Considering Sony has sold in excess of 120 million PS2 units globally, we anticipate the PS3 adoption rate could accelerate meaningfully in the coming years as the aforementioned issues are addressed and legacy PS2 players' accelerate their transition to current gen." Even if only a small fraction of PS2 owners make the transition to PS3, Sony will be rolling in the dough. We're confident that a lot of these casual PS2 owners will jump on the PS3 bandwagon over the long-haul.

EA dev: PSN has the capabilities to rival Xbox Live

Electronic Arts are bring the game Army of Two to our consoles sometime soon. The assistant producer for the title, Matt Turner, has come out and said some [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] regarding the PlayStation Network. While admitting the accessibility of all functions with Xbox Live give it the slight edge, Turner says the PSN has all the capabilities to support everything its competitor does.

Expect some workarounds to the PSN in Army of Two like what EA accomplished in Burnout Paradise. "We have friends lists accessible during the game, you can send invites and your friends can join you - it's as easy as doing it on Xbox Live," he says with what we assume was a clever grin. When we do get in-game XMB access and Home, the weights might shift to a more level playing field between Live and PSN, but we'll see.

Capcom on DMC4 installation: What's the big deal?

Posted Feb 5th 2008 1:30PM by [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
Filed under: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
The game hasn't even been released yet and already there's a lot of online controversy over [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] installation procedure. The game takes around 20 minutes to install about 5 gigabytes of data to your hard drive, during which there's a five-minute looping recap slideshow. Capcom's Chris Kramer [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] with a statement regarding the issue: "If you don't want to watch the 'Previously, on Devil May Cry...' portion of the install process, go make a sandwich and grab a soda, then come on back."

Kramer continues, "Wah! Have you ever played a PC game? At least we aren't making you shuffle multiple discs into a ROM drive, or continuously click 'Yes!' on a series of endless Windows dialog boxes." Wah, indeed! We agree completely with Kramer on this -- a twenty minute long installation sequence is not a big deal. It cuts down on load times, making it load faster than the 360 version despite the slower drive speed. Without the install, players would be complaining about lengthy load times. Which is better? That's a hypothetical question because we already know and, clearly, so does Capcom.

Solution to PAL PSN delays coming 'in the next six months'

In an [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] with [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] the Managing Director of Sony Electronic Entertainment Australia, Michael Ephraim, was asked to comment on the ridiculous delays between releases on the PAL/Australian PSN versus the US/Japanese PSN. Ephraim confirmed that the issue was the fact that all content needs to be localized for all the European languages (no change there, we've known that for months). "We're in an online space, it's a global community," he says.

When pressed that "digital distribution is supposed to break down geographic barriers," Ephraim responds that "there are discussions and we have identified that. We have been very vocal about it and I think you will see an improvement over the next six months on this issue." Should we take this to mean that a global online store is coming within the next half a year? Not impossible, but let's be realistic - we'll probably see European content lag become much shorter within that time frame (or, hopefully, nonexistent) rather than an entire global PSN Store.

Doesn't mean we can't cross our fingers for one, right?

Australia gets a new lineup of PS3 bundles

We would never forget about our lovely fans in the outback! Our Aussie PS3 enthusiasts should know that a new series of PS3 bundles is on the way, each with a game that is entirely worth the $799.95 RRP admission price. With the PS3, you get two Sixaxis controllers and any one of the following titles: Heavenly Sword, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction or NBA '08. There's something for everyone in these bundles, but if you've already got a PS3, we see there's a bigger issue to resolve. Although, you probably have most of these amazing titles anyway, right? The bundles will be available February 14th.

Sony: Platinum PS3 titles likely coming to Europe

After learning of Sony's plans to release a [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], the most shocking news of the day appears to be that Sony also plans on doing the same throughout other regions, as well.

A Sony representative [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] that,"we have introduced a Platinum range of best-selling titles for all of our platforms to date, and it is likely that we will do so in the future for PS3. However, no decisions have yet been made on timing or line-up."

Of course, we all knew it was just a matter of time before Sony released it's PlayStation 3 the Best, Platinum, Greatest Hits or whatever else it chooses to call them throughout the world. Now, the questions that remain are when they'll arrive, how much they'll be priced at and if the same games will get selected across all major regions.

EA thinks PS3 will outsell Xbox 360 this year

If you've been following the goings on at Electronic Arts in regards to the PlayStation 3, you're likely come away a bit perplexed. It seems that one minute, [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] with Sony's console, and the other minute [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Well, it looks like EA woke up on the right side of the bed this morning as it's still saying some pretty nice things about the PS3.

EA recently released estimates on how it believes this year's hardware sales will shape up in North America and Europe, and while it thinks the Wii will outsell everything, it pushed the PS3 past the Xbox 360, claiming a respectable second place. In total, EA says the PS3 will push 9.5 to 11 million units compared to only 6 to 8 million from the Xbox 360.

Moreover, according to EA's estimates, the PS3 will dominate the Xbox 360 in Europe, with the PS3 selling between 5 and 6 million units, and the Xbox 360 managing a paltry 1.5 to 2.5 million. We should all keep in mind, however, that these are just estimates and should by no means be taken as fact. But we did hear that some top EA execs had the Giants over the Patriots in the Super Bowl, so who knows?

Anime fans, rejoice! It would appear that one of the big anime distributors in the US, ADV, have decided to [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] with their upcoming releases. This announcement will go into action sometime this Spring. Don't expect any old ADV titles right away, though. They plan to release their newest items on Blu-ray first, and any important backlog films later on. Anyone who watched Sony's release of Paprika on Blu-ray knows that even animation can benefit greatly with high-definition, so we gladly welcome this change with ADV. Hopefully they'll keep prices only marginally higher than DVD -- everyone knows anime DVDs are insanely overpriced.

Codemaster CEO: Don't dismiss Sony's ten year cycle

Filed under: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
Still scoffing at Sony's claim about the PS3 lasting a decade? Maybe your particular console will only survive in that stuffy entertainment unit for six or so years, but Codemasters CEO Rod Cousens says [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. He strongly believes the cycle for the PS3 will last ten years and a strong ten years, at that. He feels momentum for Sony and the PS3 is building up, what with "killer apps" headed to the console in the next few years, Blu-ray's almost certain victory, and the success of the PS2 factors into his estimation as well.

He admits the PS3 is going to have an uphill battle in the US, where Microsoft has dug their trenches with the 360, but the European and Japanese market will begin to more readily accept the PS3 in the coming years. Speaking of the coming years, Cousens proposes that a Wii 2 (maybe renamed the Mii 2 just for funsies) will come out before a successor emerges for the PS3 or 360 -- the latter can be upgraded over the years, but won't be replaced. We hope the PS3 does make it through ten years. The PS2 is practically there and continues to hold a lineup of titles that aren't terrible. It's still the console to pick up for RPG fanatics everywhere.

Rumor: 'Slim' PS3 hitting shelves this Fall?

Filed under: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
The PlayStation 3 has undergone a lot of changes since its initial launch in November of 2006 -- price drops, backwards compatibility removal, special features and the number of memory card doohickeys all came in varying shapes and sizes. What's next?

Speculation is starting to trickle in on a tidbit of gossip help by, of course, [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] about Sony regarding a "slim" redesign of the PS3. This new design would host the same stuff we've got now, but with a bigger hard drive, Dual Shock 3 controller, and of course, a less chubby look. Like we always say, take anonymous sources with a grain of salt. It'll happen eventually, we're sure, but this Fall? Hand us our salt shaker -- we need a couple million grains to take.

It shouldn't come as a surprise that Gran Turismo 5 Prologue looks good. We've known this all along. As its March release date inches ever closer, SCEA has released a small batch of new screenshots that cement its beauty even further. Take a look at this screenshot, for example. Look at the incredible lighting on the signs in the background. The way it reflects so realistically is truly brilliant. We'd love to just stop the car, and walk out to appreciate the scenery. Maybe this engine will be used in another game in the future?

Rumor: GameStop conference call talks 120GB system, with DualShock 3

What is happening to the [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]? We've all been wondering for quite some time now. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] has heard from multiple GameStop sources that Sony's planning on introducing a new model -- 120GB (or more), bundled with a DualShock 3 controller. If the system also includes PS2 backwards compatibility, it would be the most primo system to date. However, details of BC and a release date haven't been unearthed by IGN's sources.

The details, however, match an earlier rumor from [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], which pointed to a 120GB system bundled with a rumbling controller. With so many different sources confirming the same thing, we feel as though it won't be long until Sony announces a new SKU. Perhaps at GDC?

Sony game division actually makes profit

Filed under: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
It's finally paying off. Sony's risky gamble with the PS3 is finally netting the Japanese electronics company some green. Sony's third fiscal quarter had a 25% rise in net income to 200.2 billion yen ($1.9 billion) for the entire company. According to the [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], the typically loss-driven games division also generated some profit due to reduced production costs.

Still, Sony has had to lower its PS3 sales goal for the fiscal year ending in March from 11 million to a less lofty one of 9.5 million. The company has managed to sell 4.9 million consoles from October to December of 2007 -- that's quite a significant number of consoles! Sony's other system, PSP, is becoming increasingly important to the company -- its sales goal has been raised from 10 to 13 million units.

With further reductions to the cost of manufacturing, and an ever-increasing library of games and Blu-ray movies, it looks like things are finally looking up for the once-beleaguered company.

What's all this talk about a 65nm Cell processor? That's so 2007! At the ISSCC -- that's the International Solid State Circuits Conference -- Sony is going to unveil its newest creation, the 45nm Cell chip (not pictured above ... it's practically invisible). This form of the processor will consume 40% less energy than the 65nm chip. Sony is working on getting the chip out there, but we've no idea if there are plans to incorporate it into the next wave of PS3 machines. Still, it's very cool to see a chip so very, very small able to do so many, many things.

Faith and a .45 devs toss their ideas around about the game

Earlier we introduced you to [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] from Denmark developers Deadline Games called Faith and a .45 -- a Bonnie and Clyde type of tale. Cross-country mayhem, crooked cops, you know. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] has gotten a more in-depth preview of the game and we're pretty interested in what was covered. You control Luke, with Ruby as your AI-controlled partner -- but a second player online or offline can take control of her at any time. The two work dynamically: if Luke does a good job, Ruby will offer him a kiss for a job well done (and if he dies but Ruby lives, she'll give him a kiss that magically brings him back to life). Other cooperative moves were mentioned, but it's up to you to read them.

A sheriff named Duke plays a role sort of like Nemesis from Resident Evil 3 -- constantly hunting down the protagonists on their journey across the country. Boss battles will exist, but come in the form of a tank or an area swamped with well-trained baddies instead of one super-powered gun-toting maniac. You can upgrade your weapons, puzzles will be physics-based (sorry, wooden box puzzle lovers) and a narrative that goes beyond scripted cut-scenes. Perhaps branching stories based on your choices, but the early development cycle allows the devs to figure all that out later. It's a 2009 or 1

In-game ads, not as useful as once thought?

While advertisers are happy to talk that up, there is a limit to the amount of money available."

He and Kotick ran into agreement that "young people don't like advertising very much" and that it's a bit early to get too far into in-game ads. What do you guys think? Is it too early for video games to accept in-game advertising on a large scale? Are gamers going to feel the advertisements are intrusive and block them out, just like TV ads? It's up to us to see if this method will ultimately succeed or fail.

Europeans being price gouged by retailers for PS3 DMC4

Europeans are in for a nasty surprise when they go to order Devil May Cry 4 from many popular retailers. For some reason, the PS3 version of the game costs a significant amount more than the Xbox 360 version -- up to £10 in some instances. However, this isn't a Capcom-mandated price difference. Rather, it appears retailers are taking it into their own hands.

Speaking to [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], a spokesperson for Capcom said: "We don't set the prices of our games, that's at the discretion of the retailer. In this specific instance, the process has resulted in a price difference, but the process itself is not something we completely control."

Hopefully, gamer outrage will remind retailers that no one likes to be treated unfairly. Stay tuned for our full review of Devil May Cry 4 next week.

Will you enter the Warhawk paint scheme and insignia contest?

There are a lot of hardcore Warhawk fans on PS3 Fanboy. But how many of you are also artists as well? Sony wants to know, and is hosting a new contest, where you must submit your paint and insignias for good old fashioned prizes. Winners will not only have their content featured within the game (a la Folklore), but will also receive a special limited edition statue. Sounds like a pretty sweet deal to us.

CryENGINE 2 to be shown on PS3 at GDC

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]'s amazing engine behind Crysis is finally coming to PS3. (Does this mean we'll be able to play the wonderful FPS on our console as well?) "This year's engine will be shown for the first time running on multiple hardware platforms such as the PS3 and Xbox 360, to a select audience" during GDC. Are we allowed to be part of that audience, Crytek?
Cevat Yerli, Sten Hübler and Bernd Diemer will host a GDC session entitled "Crysis in the Making", providing a behind the scenes look at the challenges of developing Crysis and the CryENGINE 2. Other Crytek staff will also be in attendance at various programs during the show: Chris Evans, Technical Art Lead, Tomas Neumann, Crytek's Audio Programmer, and Tiago Sousa, R&D Graphics Programmer. Crytek will also host a series of public presentations at their booth #6611 in the North Hall.
Game Developer's Conference begins on February 18th in San Francisco. PS3 Fanboy will be updating live from the scene. Stay tuned.

GTA IV screens steal our attention, then beat it to death

We're not going to lie -- when the first screenshots for Grand Theft Auto IV leaked out onto the interwebs, we thought the game was rather fugly. Nothing against the folk at Rockstar or anything, we just didn't really think they looked that special. We've got [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] now and the game seems to be improving in visual quality. But really, who plays the GTA games for the graphics? It's all about the stuff you can get your character into and that seems just as top-notch as ever. We're looking forward to seeing and hearing more!

Like I told you in chit chat, what you're talking about is a stream of water with a series of lights flashing through them to create an image. What I'm showing you is a 3D projection of light, which is much more complicated.
