[Market Suggestion]Ip Bans for scammers.

Hey,Well I'm aaron,a frequent trader here on GzP's Maplestory market and most of you know its filled with scammers..Now some of these scammers do get banned,We all know this, you see the names in pink and you think,ha.. i knew there was somthing fishy about that guy...Well they also just come right back and i myself have reported people and talked to mods and i see the same guys trading in the market...i go around saying don't trade with this guy but you can only do so much without being called a Spammer, witch i am not.
What I'm getting to(the title) i think you guys should start giving IP banns.
Even if you don't,just mention it...I know that would help allot.
Allot of people would get scared straight.I hate having to worry about who im trading with in the market,Yes i know its a risk I'm taking not your problem completely mine, but on the other hand i know you all(mods and admins) want to make this a friendlier safer place
Also think of it this way, probably about 50%(if that) forumies,Ours and mbms think The market section is all scammers..Thats not a good thing to have on your site..
I'm not saying it is,I love the trade section its a grate place...Just needs a little cleaning out.IP banns or mention of them(not putting to use) will help do this.
Please don't flame me for this,Like the forum says, its just a suggestion.

OO on a side note,I'm not saying Ban every one that is accused of scamming,Just as always you need proof...lots of it.

Re: [Market Suggestion]Ip Bans for scammers.

There's a reason we seldom use IP bans:
1. If people are wasting their time creating multiple accounts, they'll also waste their time using proxies or changing their IP.
2. Not everyone has a pseudo-static IP.
3. Not everyone has their own IP address. Many ISPs actually use a form of public proxying; at any given time, 100 users could be under one particular ISP-assigned anonymous proxy. We ban that IP, and all 100 users are affected.

For the most part, it's just not a feasible solution.

As for threatening the use of IP bans.. I really don't see how that'd hit home with scammers any more than threatening with account banning. Both are evadable by your average joe.

I don't know what kind of administrator you are, but you seem to be out of it right now.

I know for a fact, that when you ban someone on vbulletin, they are banned by:

1. Name
2. Email Address
3. Internet Protocol
4. Host

"For a fact"? Funny that... because you're actually wrong on 3/4 counts. An account ban is just that, an account ban. It switches the usergroup over to the banned usergroup, prohibiting access to the rest of the forum, and that's it.

Re: [Market Suggestion]Ip Bans for scammers.

Well thanks for looking into it but i really do think you should at least warm people about IP banning(even if in most cases you wont implant them)
Its better to do something then nothing.

Re: [Market Suggestion]Ip Bans for scammers.

The weird thing is, there is no official stance on 'Scammers' by GzP, or at least not one that I know of. I say that because I don't ban someone that scams, I will usually just skip over those reported threads. The reason behind my feelings is that you can hardly ever actually prove someone scammed you. Aside from video footage of the conversation, I won't accept anything else as proof and will probably give out infractions for someone who follows around the 'Scammer' flaming him in all their threads.

So to go out there and say "We're going to IP ban anyone accused of 'scamming'", is just ludicrous. We'd be over run with people saying they were scammed for no good reason but to have someone banned.

Well you have a point but from what you said above it all go's right out the window.
'' I will usually just skip over those reported threads''
If thats the fact then why not still be doing it?Has any thing changed?
I'm not saying you have to enforce this,I'm saying throw it out there, like i said before doing something is better then doing nothing at all and not doing something because you don't want to spend the time sorting threw reports(thats kind of your job isint it? As a moderator and all?)thats just plain outrageous.
But this isint all up to me,its just a suggestion and i know allot of you are to hard-headed to listen and then do something.

Re: [Market Suggestion]Ip Bans for scammers.

It's my job as a moderator to maintain the rules of GzP. I don't see 'scamming' as breaking any of these rules. If anything I think that this forum is a breeding ground for scamming. We teach kids to hack games, why not hack life? Scamming is just social engineering at its finest.

Re: [Market Suggestion]Ip Bans for scammers.

Neoaaron, I think the reasons we have for not issuing IP bans have all been pointed out by r2k. Simply put: Whatever he says is fine for me.

Regarding your Pincracking comment: You'll have to ask the MapleStory moderators about that. That's a completely unrelated topic, and you shouldn't have brought it up here.

<@hesham8> Gate, what the **** are you talking about!? All you do is yell "BAM!" and throw chives everywhere.
<@hesham8> I do the same thing at weddings, except I yell "CONGRATULATIONS" and throw rice.
<@Gate> hesham8, you're a fag.
