The whole problem with a auto-thanks is,

I download a file that contains malware/virus/rootkit, and he gets thanks for it? Negative.

I download a file that was ripped off from another person that actually should get the thanks.

That's two of the many flaws, but it is a good idea, in some ways.

we can forget the auto thanks and have a pop up saying do you want to thank the user

I wouldn't want to thanks someone for a malicious file, neither would I want to give them points for one. However something need to remind downloaders to use the thanks system for helpful files.

What if we make every download approval needed so Mods/Admisn decide if the download deserves to be thanked/rewarded points for?

The problem with that is the same as if mods had to approve attachments, it creates more work for the mods and often members get annoyed with having to wait.

On top of what Storm said, Moderators already have enough work to do on their individual hands - Moderating Forums. I doubt they'd like getting another job to do.

don't forget you can always use "removed thanks" if the file found infected!...

What if the guy had forgotten to scan it, and extracted the virus the package contained into his computer, at which his computer would already start crashing.

You think he'd come back to GzP just to ' Remove Thanks ' ?

I think a prompt as a reminder wouldn't really help people to remember to use the thanks button. More than likely, they'll close GzP, test whatever it is they've downloaded and then come back. The best chance we've got of getting people to use the Thanks button is through the staff reminding members, and through a global announcement.
