What about if we had a program that scanned for viruses before it can be posted?

We have a Feature that allows to scan it.

But a thing that MAKES you scan a file would even be better. You have my "Vote".

Because then we'd have people scanning screenshots with AVs. And now you're about to suggest "only for certain file extensions", well people will just rename the file extension and say "rename to .exe" to evade it.

And, then, what happens when we get a false positive? Is it not permitted?

well, some kind of flagging it from the beginning?
or disallowing the attachment download until a mod approves it? - if it turns out positive/false positive.

The Moderators are busy enough, that would just add more to the shit load of work they have to do now.

In a lot of sections, that's already how it is. Once an attachment is uploaded, it requires moderator approval. I think that's a decent enough security system.

When people download files, they should automatically scan it with their own anti-virus program - if not with the one provided. If they don't they'd be putting they're own computer at risk.

Thus, in the event that people actually post viruses and people download them, as long as they don't extract the contents to their computers and scan it - upon finding a virus, delete it, they'll be safe.

The sections that this would actually be useful for already have virus-prevention measures in place (i.e. moderator queues)... I don't really think we need to take it a step further. (Besides the fact that I'm not sure exactly how feasible it is -- are you going to write a vB mod to do this?)
