Hibernation vs Shut Down

im using an old laptopn, and i find it much quicker and easier to put the laptop on hibernation mode, rather than shut it down then restart it.

i have heard that puting the computer in hibernation mode is almost the same as shutting down and that it doesnt do any harm, but i have also heard that it causes harware failiures if i use it all the time... so whats the truth?

should i continue to put in hibernation mode?

please help

Re: Hibernation vs Shut Down

I use it when I don't feel like starting my computer up the next day.

I've put my comp in hibernation mode for a month straight and no harm has been done to it.

So, no, it doesn't really hurt it. Just shut it down every now and then so it gives the hardware a little break.

Re: Hibernation vs Shut Down

My mini desktop is always on. It's either that, or it's in standby mode. Hibernation is the same as keeping your computer on and never shutting it down because your operating system is never "refreshed".

I've never had problems with any of them, so you shouldn't either.

EDIT: My system only consumes 35 watts at full load so I tend to let my computer run 24/7 and idle most of the time. I have never gotten memory corruption or instability issues.

Re: Hibernation vs Shut Down

Hibernation causes the PC's current state to be written into the harddrive. Putting it on sleep sends the PC's current state into the RAM.

My laptop is always on, aside from weekly shutdowns that I do. I never hibernate.

Wow, I ever knew where it went when it was in those modes. I just assumed that it just like paused everything and put all the hardware on bare minimum.

Thanks for saying that

Re: Hibernation vs Shut Down

I prefer shutting down, but I haven't really seen any issue with hibernation. Does the using hibernation also require more disk clean-up?

Re: Hibernation vs Shut Down

Hibernation just continues to consume your power, while Shut Down doesn't.

Obvious Reason No. 1.

Thanks.

No it doesn't.
Hibernation copies the RAM to HD and turns off the computer (but not the OS).
The hardware is off but when you start it again everything is as you left it.
