Possible reasons why:
1. You got infracted.
2. You double posted.
3. One of your posts was deleted.
4. One of your threads was deleted/Closed.
5. Somebody stole points off you.

Same thing happened to me lol. Do you lose points from getting +Repped? Cause I checked and I got +Repped, but I lost hella points (ok maybe only 1000).

There was a glitch before, not sure if it is still there, but people were randomly losing points for no reason. And no, you would not lose points from +rep.

Jammer, please check your typo.

As for the topic, I have experienced that bug too. I asked EvilKing to make my points be 2.5k again. Put your spare points in the bank to prevent this kinds of bugs, if it prevents it.
