Overselling, is essentially, a poor way to cheap you of your cash. When you see one
host offering 50gb of bandwidth, 500mb of space for $10 a month versus one with
1000gb of bandwidth and 200gb of space for the same price, who would you go for? If
you answered "Yes", you're susceptible to overselling.
The way it works for most companies is, they offer you 10-30x more than they could
ever imagine of delivering. How do they legally squirm out if it, you ask?
What most oversellers have, in their ToS, something along the lines of "you will not
cause the slow down, time out, etc of other websites on the server". Now, if you're
on a web server with, say, 30 websites, chances are you won't do any damage using
200gb of bandwidth w/5gb of disk space. But if you're on one with 120 websites
hosted on it, you're in a hell of a lotta trouble. The host can and will shut you down claiming you should either: 1) upgrade to a VPS/dedicated host, 2) cut down on plugins/resources, 3) find another host.
By now, you probably are thinking, "Hah, no one would use them then!" or "This kid
is lying - he probably just wants to recommend me to some host he gets referral cash for". Let me ask you a question, young reader: Have you read reviews about hosts at WHT? You may have used Google to just "look around" and found your host at many "Top 10 Host" websites. Let me let you in on a little secret - 99.5% of those websites are paid off by the host, or abused by the host. Just notice that they all offer similar, said be "oversold" packages.
To further expand on proof, here's a few blogs I've selected that you can read from:
