Overselling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Overselling, is essentially, a poor way to cheap you of your cash. When you see one
host offering 50gb of bandwidth, 500mb of space for $10 a month versus one with
1000gb of bandwidth and 200gb of space for the same price, who would you go for? If
you answered "Yes", you're susceptible to overselling.

The way it works for most companies is, they offer you 10-30x more than they could
ever imagine of delivering. How do they legally squirm out if it, you ask?

What most oversellers have, in their ToS, something along the lines of "you will not
cause the slow down, time out, etc of other websites on the server". Now, if you're
on a web server with, say, 30 websites, chances are you won't do any damage using
200gb of bandwidth w/5gb of disk space. But if you're on one with 120 websites
hosted on it, you're in a hell of a lotta trouble. The host can and will shut you down claiming you should either: 1) upgrade to a VPS/dedicated host, 2) cut down on plugins/resources, 3) find another host.

By now, you probably are thinking, "Hah, no one would use them then!" or "This kid
is lying - he probably just wants to recommend me to some host he gets referral cash for". Let me ask you a question, young reader: Have you read reviews about hosts at WHT? You may have used Google to just "look around" and found your host at many "Top 10 Host" websites. Let me let you in on a little secret - 99.5% of those websites are paid off by the host, or abused by the host. Just notice that they all offer similar, said be "oversold" packages.

To further expand on proof, here's a few blogs I've selected that you can read from:

WordPress › Support » CPU exceeded errors
    Godaddy hosting - sucks!
Decent hosting, not overselling like Hostgator or Polurnet --Dreamseeker
    iPowerweb Sucks: Vol. II
Lunarpages - Read This BEFORE You Sign Up - Lunarpages Review
Hostgator Sucks - Brian's First Amendment Site
    Why DreamHost Sucks
    Siteground = No Support
    Brilliance of Yahoo
    Truth of EasyCGI
    Many IX Hosting Reviews
    1&1 is GREAT! (sarcasm)

    tl;dr

Do not use the following, unless you enjoy being SCREWED over:

    Code:
    - DreamHost
    - Host Gator
    - Lunar Pages
    - GoDaddy (For domain management only I still give them a 10/10; the rest 0.5/10)
    - SiteGround
    - iPower
    - Blue Host
    - IX Hosting
    - Yahoo Hosting
    - StartLogic
    - 1&1/1and1
    - VPSLand
    - EasyCGI
    - ResellersPanel
    - PowWeb
    - HostMonster
    - Globat
    - InMotion
    - midPhase
    - Dot 5
    - AN Hosting
    - Business Plus
    - VistaPages
    - PowWeb
    - webhostingBuzz
    - HostICan
    - Host Papa
    - Mosts hosts found on a "Top 10 Host" websites.
    Hosts I recommend, that I know/trust personally:

Charlottezweb | HOME | Hosting, Domains, Design & More!
    MonteCarloHosting :: Business-Class WebHosting Solutions - Home
    G.C. Solutions
    DedicatedBox.net :: Dedicated Servers

Note: The purpose of this thread staying open is to discuss decent hosts, some to avoid, questions about overselling, etc.

Fezzzy: As far as I know, all the hosts I listed are "okay" with TALKING about it - hosting illegal content or using it for illegal purposes are not permitted however.

Just read the AUPs and ToS of each host provided.

    Regards,

    Trez

To add, "DedicatedBox" has been having major sales - $45/month for either:

    AMD Athlon XP 2000+ - 1024MB DDRam, 120GB HDD, 1000GB Traffic, 100Mbit

    [ or ]

    Intel Celeron 2,0Ghz - 1024MB DDRam, 120GB HDD, 1000GB Traffic, 100Mbit

I actually got me an Athlon just today - if you plan on buying one, I'd hurry. Prices are going back up pretty soon.

Nice post, yeah there are many hosts that oversell, can't blame them, since servers cost a lot of money. For blogging sites, these hosts are good for that, but for file sharing is a no-no.

If you want to be save, either host your website on your home computer, I do that somewhat. Buy a VPS or dedicated server.

I'm going to show this page to my friend who uses dreamhost to host their blog, but it has videos and stuff, but not many visit.

    HostDepartment.com = sex.

unlimited space/traffic/email/subdomains/1st level domains/mysql databases (w/ unlimited space) for like <5$ a month (or like 24$ every six months), PHP 4 (the only downside...)

Been using them for years and they have not ONCE let me down.

Hmm, I have used siteground for about 2 years and found no problems with them with no downtime or such, and I REALLY made use of their given bandwidth and disk space

And yes, their support is great unlike the link you gave though,
but that was last year, thus things have changed, most probably IMHO.

    P.S - Zorex recommended me siteground. =X

    Johnith93, this isn't a thread for advertisements.

In fact, I feel that the point of oversellers and how they operate was given appropriately. Thread closed.
