King Horatio captured 100 prisoners from the island Martinique. Intrigued by mind games, Horatio gave the prisoners a chance to live but only if they successfully completed the task below.

    The King announced the following:

Tomorrow, at the cackle of the rooster and the gray of dawn, I will line up all 100 prisoners front to back. You will be able to see only those people lined up in front of you. Atop each of your heads I will place a hat. The hat will be BLACK or WHITE and will be placed on your head in completely random order. After I have placed the hats I will start with the last person in line. To each I will ask a simple question...........

    Black or White?

    - Each prisoner will only be able to say a ONE WORD answer. Any other words, signals, movements, or gestures that might help the others will result in the prisoners being ALL executed.

The prisoners plotted diligently through the night. Six minutees before dusk, they had conceived a plan that would result in the following...

    1. 99 of the 100 prisoners would have a 100% chance of survival.
    2. 1 of the prisoners would have a 50% chance of survival.

The last person would see everyone else's hat. So he would say "black" if there are an odd number of black hats that he sees. The answer "white" will mean that there are an odd number of white hats that he sees.
At this time guy #99 will either be wearing a white or a black hat. If he is wearing a white hat he will only see an even number of white hats, and since guy #100 said that there is and odd number of white hats, guy #99 will know that he is wearing white and will say it. But if guy #99 is wearing a black hat, he will see an odd number of white hats (just like #100 did), and thus will know that he is wearing a black hat and will say it. No matter what #99 answers, guy #98 (who heard guy #100 and guy #99) can now easily incorporate the color of hat on guy #99 into the original answer of guy #100. This will allow #98 to know if he should see an odd or even number of white hats in front of him to determine his own hat color. The same thing repeats.

The first person to answer would get a 50/50 because of his role in the survival of the rest of them. He could get lucky.

Lol, google. Differnt # of ppl but same solution.

if the question gives that the number of black hat=50 and white hat=50 and total up 100 of hats, then excel got the right answer.
